SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Preparing Your Manuscript

Please read the guidelines in full before submitting your manuscript. Your article must be within the scope of the journal and be of sufficient quality. If not, it will not be reviewed. Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines may be returned. By submitting your paper to Journal of Applied Research in Criminal Justice you are agreeing to originality checks during the peer-review and production processes.

Authorship

The manuscript must be your original work, you must have the rights to the work, and you must have obtained and be able to supply all necessary permissions for the reproduction of any copyright works not owned by you, including figures, illustrations, tables, lengthy quotations, or other material previously published elsewhere.

A complete list of authors, including full names, academic affiliations, and corresponding author contact details must be included on the title page of the article. All authors must have given consent for the manuscript to be submitted in its current form.

Article Types Accepted

RESEARCH ARTICLES. Research Articles should present novel work within the scope of the journal which represents an important advancement in knowledge or understanding. Research articles need to include an introduction, a well-reported methodology, results, and a discussion of the results in the context of the published literature.

The Journal of Applied Research in Criminal Justice publishes research on criminology, criminal justice and interdisciplinary research on crime and society. It is particularly interested in submissions falling within the following categories:

  • Conceptually-oriented articles, especially on new and emerging themes, that deal with, or relate to, the areas of criminology and criminal justice;
  • Policy-focused articles proposing fresh thinking and new ideas in response to new and emerging, as well as established, policy challenges in these areas;
  • Empirical articles that break new ground on criminological topics and which use new or innovative methodologies.
  • Word Limit - 6,000 - 8,000 words in length, including all elements (title page, abstract, notes, references, tables, biographical statement)
  • Abstract Word Limit - 150 - 200
  • Reference Limit - 150
  • Table Limit - None
  • Figure Limit - None

BOOK REVIEWS. Book reviews should provide brief summaries of books that are relevant to the field, along with meaningful commentary that provides readers with guidance on the practical value of the reviewed book. The journal accepts unsolicited book reviews.

  • Word Limit - 1,000 - 2,500
  • Reference Limit - Unlimited
  • Table Limit - None
  • Figure Limit - None

Manuscript Formatting

The preferred format for your manuscript is Word. You do not need to follow a template, but please ensure your heading levels are clear, and the sections clearly defined.

MANUSCRIPT TITLE.Your manuscript’s title should be concise, descriptive, unambiguous, accurate, and reflect the precise contents of the manuscript

Structure

Your paper should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list).

TITLE PAGE.The Title Page should include:

  • Article title
  • The full list of authors including names and affiliations of each
  • Contact information for the corresponding author: name, institutional address, phone, email
The Title Page will not be sent to peer reviewers.

ABSTRACT.Please include a unstructured abstract of 150-200 words between the title and main body of your manuscript that concisely states the purpose of the research, major findings, and conclusions. If your research includes clinical trials, the trial registry name and URL, and registration number must be included at the end of the abstract.

KEYWORDS.Please include a minimum of 4 keywords, listed after the abstract. Keywords should be as specific as possible to the research topic.

REFERENCE STYLE AND CITATIONS.The journal follows the APA reference style. Every in-text citation must have a corresponding citation in the reference list and vice versa. Corresponding citations must have identical spelling and year.

FIGURES. Figures should be high quality (1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for color, at the correct size). Figures should be supplied in JPEG or PNG format ONLY.

TABLES.Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text. Readers should be able to interpret the table without reference to the text.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE.Please supply a short biographical note for each author. This could be adapted from your departmental website or academic networking profile and should be relatively brief (e.g. no more than 200 words).

Submitting Revisions

Once articles have been reviewed, a request may be received to re-submit the article with specified revisions, prior to a final acceptance. To submit a revision of your original article, please locate your article and follow the form requirements.
